Studio Report: Part 5

2 October 2009

Bass and vocals are ready. Olek managed to finish recording bass on Friday, just as he was supposed to. I’d thought I would finish recording clean vocals by Friday as well, but eventually I took a break at the weekend (well, actually it wasn’t really a break: we travelled about 1100km and played a gig) and got back to the studio on Monday morning. I finished recording last background vocals on Tuesaday…or actually Wednesday, since it was well after midnight. I’m not the person to judge my own work; all I can say is that I did my best and so did Krzysztof (Kramarz). You will be the judges – I can only hope that my performance will not disappoint you.

On Wednesday afternoon I was back in Dębica in Chinook Studio. Together with Krzysztof (Godycki) we built a huge wall of equipment and started looking for a perfect guitar sound. This is always the best part for me – this time we had loads of fun, too! We had 5 all-tube heads and 5 guitar cabinets at our disposal, so we tested all possible combinations and experimented with different microphones. Eventually we decided to record 2 amps simultaneously: my Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier Roadster hooked to an Orange PPC412 AD cab and Peavey 6505 hooked to a Marshall 1960 cab (thanks, Tomasz!). What does it sound like? Well, me, Papirus and Krzysztof (Godycki) were blown away, Alek also definitely liked what he heard, only Olek seemed a little disappointed, but only because, as he said, he had expected a slightly different sound. On Thursday I started the actual recording and managed to nail ALMOST 2 tracks. Today we finished that not-quite-ready track plus got about half way through another. Thanks for your spiritual support! On Saturday we start early morning, lets hope it will be a fruitful day.

Studio Report: Part 4

22 September 2009

Ok, we haven’t been posting for a while but this doesn’t mean we’ve been doing nothing. Just on the contrary, this has been a really hectic time for us. All drums are done now and currenty we are working in two studios simultaneously: Olek is recording bass in our good ol’ CHINOOK studio in Dębica and I’m recording clean vocals in FONOWIZJA studio in Kraków. For all the gear maniacs: Olek is using MUSIC MAN bass guitar and AMPEG SVT CLASSIC amp and cabinets for recording and my vocals are recorded through NEUMANN U87 microphone and UNIVERSAL AUDIO 6176 preamp. Olek says bass recording is going really smoothly, but I have to say my vocals are being born in pain… And I mean literally, since my throat was strained yesterday and is a bit sore now… Oh well, “no pain – no game”… Remember us in your prayers.

Studio Report: Part 3

17 September 2009

OK, another 2 tracks are done. So far, we have recorded drums for 5 songs: “The Promise (I)”, “The Promise (II)”, “a Blessing”, “Illumina Tenebras Meas” and “… i o tym drugim”. This means drums for half of the album are done! The only problem is that Papirus has caught some sort of infection and isn’t feeling very well at the moment… Let’s hope he’ll get better soon. Also, I forgot to say that on our myspace blog you can find some photos from the studio. Enjoy.

Studio Report: Part 2

16 September 2009

Yesterday Papirus recorded those two songs which required a slightly different drum sound and spent the rest of the day setting the sound for the remaining tracks. Today morning he went straight into recording and, although a bit tired, managed to record almost two tracks.

Studio Report: Part 1

14 September 2009

Today Papirus brought all his precious toys into the studio and we spent all day experimenting with different instruments, membranes, tunings and microphone settings. We wanted to find a perfect drum sound for each track. In the end we decided that two tracks will have a slightly different drum sound. After a busy in the studio day I guess we can say we’ve found the sound we wanted. Tomorrow morning the actual recording starts.
